Day 1 Km 0 - 90 Pompey

With a fitting send-off, we hit the road.

Our first port of call is Portsmouth to take the ferry to Santander in Northern Spain (we're taking a bit of a short-cut) so our first leg is only a short hop down the M3/M27. However, the coolant level warning light is blinking before we even reach Andover and no matter how much the blower is running, we can't shift the condensation on the inside of the windows, it starts absolutely bucketing down with torrential rain and the temperature gauge is showing that Phoebe is running a little hot. But absolutely nothing is going to dampen our spirits as our adventure begins!

We meet fellow Banjul Challengers The Masseykissed (Mike, Pat and Carol) at the quayside and soon we are gliding past the Royal Navy's finest and England gradually receeds to a smudge on the horizon. A few hours are spent getting to know our new-found friends in the bar and given the stress and exhaustion of the past few days' preparation, we all turn in early for a nice refreshing nights' sleep. This is the way to travel!
